Chapter 8

Finding out information for myself took time. I had to snoop around without he boys finding out. And I had to figure out where to look without looking suspicious when I asked certain questions. So I knew I wasn’t going to find out right away what had happened.

But there wasn’t a very big rush. I wanted to know, but I had other things to focus on, too. Like my schoolwork, which I couldn’t have falling behind, even if I was part of the Council now. Not that I ever went out on missions in class the way the boys did. But I was grateful for that, to be honest. I wasn’t ready yet, and I knew that now. My power needed to be honed, I needed to figure out how to use it. And I wasn’t ready to face some kind of Slayer or something else and get into a fight the way the boys did.

They hadn’t for a while now, but I knew it wasn’t over.

Priscilla and I sat outside in the sun, eating sandwiches. I had asked Mooney to pack me lunch so that I could stay out at lunch and not need to go back to the Manor. I could do some snooping without the boys knowing if they didn’t expect me back.

“Do you sometimes think about Daniel?” I asked Priscilla.

She glanced up at me. “Why?”

I pulled up my shoulders. “A student died on campus. Sometimes I think about it. I was just wondering if you do, too.”

That wasn’t completely true, but it was a good start.

“Not really,” Priscilla admitted. “But I push these things away if I don’t have answers. It scares me, if I have to be honest.”

“Why?” I asked.

“He was walking around here, a student just like the rest of us, and we didn’t know he wasn’t okay. That’s terrifying. What if there are other things I’m missing too?”

I nodded, understanding where she came from.

“Does anyone know what Dragon family he came from?” I asked.

There were different types of Dragon shifters. Priscilla and Dracus were from the same dragon country, but there were others, too.

“I didn’t even know he existed, remember?” Priscilla pointed out. “I have no idea. Why do you ask?”

“I was just wondering,” I said. “I didn’t even know if he had brothers and sisters who go here or anything.”

“I don’t think so, Dean Demetrius would have mentioned something.”

I nodded. I wanted to know who Daniel had been, I needed to know more about him. I wanted to know why he was a target. But I wasn’t going to get anything more from Priscilla, so I let it go. I didn’t want her to know what I was up to, not yet.

“What’s happening with the school dance, now?” I asked.

Priscilla was on the student body that planned stuff like school dances, and it was supposed to be the first dance the Academy allowed in a while. But it had been put on hold after Daniel’s death and then the explosion.

“Oh, we’re on again,” she said with a broad grin.
